The Yoga Cafe is a yoga studio in Greensboro, North Carolina. The name can be confusing, but they don't serve food, just tea. They're located across the street from Guilford College, next to Quaker Village, at 711 Milner Drive, in a small building that is part brick and part yellow siding. It looks cheerful, warm, and inviting form the outside, and the inside gets even better. As soon as you walk in, you'll notice the subtle but sweet smells that seem to change from room to room, the inviting colors of soft orange, light purple, and warm yellow, and the quiet music playing. When you first walk in, you're in a small area that consists of a bulletin board filled with papers announcing events and services, such as meditation groups, various training courses, available housekeepers and landscapers. There are two tables below the bulletin board filled with business cards and pamphlets for small local businesses and independent contractors, such as acupuncture therapists. Both the bulletin board and table are completely open to the public, so if you have information you want to post, you can do it at Yoga Cafe. Many people, when entering or leaving the Yoga Cafe, stop for a few minutes to peruse the business cards and bulletin board. Against the other wall are a variety of free magazines and newspapers, such as Natural Triad, Yes! Weekly, and The Art of Wellbeing. Past that first area is the lobby, which consists of a large, comfortable couch next to a table filled with yoga and massage magazines, a tea bar, and the front desk. The tea bar has a few different brands of tea, mainly Yogi Tea and Celestial Seasonings in all different flavors, but also has a brand called Artisan's Cup which is a local loose leaf tea in a few yummy flavors. Any tea can be bought by the cup or pot, or you can buy it by the box (or in the case of Artisan's Cup, the bag). If you want to sit down and enjoy a pot or cup of tea, there is a room to the left of the entrance that contains four tables with chairs and another large couch. That room also contains most of the gift shop items for sale at the Yoga Cafe. Among items for sale are yoga clothes, books, CDs, mats, mat bags, and props, candles and incense, jewelry and decorations, tea accessories, stones, sarongs, and greeting cards. In the lobby, there is also a display rack featuring essential oils that are for sale, along with base oils for mixing, a natural bug repellent, and a few devices used to release the scent of an essential oil throughout a room or car. If you head to the front desk, you'll find, in addition to friendly workers who are ready to assist you, pamphlets and flyers explaining the services offered. There are copies of the yoga schedule which gives the names, dates, times, and teachers of the various classes, a massage therapy pamphlet that elaborates on different massage services, a flyer explaining the Ion Cleanse, which is a detoxifying footbath, and a pamphlet that gives a general overview of all the services provided. Yoga classes are available Monday through Saturday. You don't need to call to sign up; you can just "drop in" on a class and pay the drop-in fee ($14 adults, $9 students, $12.60 for seniors over 60). If it's your first time, come a few minutes early (5-10) because there's a little bit of paperwork you'll need to fill out. You can also buy a yoga package, which means you buy classes in groups of 5, 10, 24, or 36. The cost per class gets cheaper the larger the package. 5 classes are $60 ($12/class), 10 classes are $110 ($11/class), 24 classes are $216 ($9/class) and 36 classes are $252 ($7/class). The student package is 10 classes for $85 ($8.50/class). Student prices apply to high school, college, grad school, and adult students. If you buy a package, you can go to as many or as little classes a week as you'd like. There are no real rules as to how to use your yoga package; they do expire after a certain time, depending on the size of the package, but these rules aren't strictly enforced and exceptions can always be made if you talk to the owner (Judi Rossabi). You can rent a yoga mat for $1 or buy one (they cost about $25 to $35 depending on the size and type) in the gift shop. If you buy one, you get a free class. There is a beginner yoga series offered twice a week for students who have never done yoga. It's a good idea to get into this one at the beginning of a session (session dates are on the yoga schedule and online), but not necessary. For those who know a little bit of yoga, Yoga Foundations and Yoga Foundations I&II are good. For those who need to work at a slow, careful pace, Gentle Yoga is offered. For those looking for something a little more challenging, Anusara is available. And for those looking for a bit of a cardio workout, Flow Yoga for Wellness and Weightloss is excellent (but not recommended for someone who has never done yoga before). And Monday night is college night, which means that if you're a student (undergraduate, graduate, or high school, it doesn't matter), you can drop into the flow class for $5. Pilates has been offered in the past and will be offered again in the future; the same rules and pricings apply. In addition to yoga, tai chi is also available. This you have to sign up for before the session starts and buy a package for (5 classes for $60). Usually, Beginner Tai Chi, Intermediate Tai Chi, and Advanced Tai Chi are offered (sometimes along with a specialty class) but each class must have enough students signed up to proceed, so during some sessions, only one or two of these are offered. As for massage therapy, there are many different kinds available, such as reiki, which is energy work that involves light touch techniques, reflexology, which focuses only on the hands and feet, hot stone massage, which is great during winter and involves placing hot stones on the client's body throughout the massage, and thai yoga massage, where the therapist moves the client's body in different ways, stretching them and simulating yoga poses. A standard massage (swedish or deep tissue) costs $70 for an hour, $95 for 90 minutes, and $40 for a half hour. Reflexology and Reiki cost $60 an hour, $30 a half hour. A hot stone massage costs $90 per hour, $125 for 90 minutes, and a thai yoga massage cost $85 per hour. You can also buy massage packages and save a little money. There is more information about that on the website. It's best to schedule at least a day in advance, but same day appointments can often be accommodated. More than an hour's notice is necessary, though. All the massage therapists are licensed and certified. The rooms are comfortable, painted as colorfully as the rest of the building and furnished with soft warm light and simple decorations. Music will be played during the massage (unless you'd prefer not), and high quality, natural lotions, massage oils, and aromatherapy oils are used (and these can all be tailored to your specific needs). The detoxifying footbath that is offered is called an Ion Cleanse and needs to be scheduled like a massage appointment. You'll be put in a comfortable room, where you will sit down and put your feet in warm water. An array is placed in the water that creates negative ions and pulls toxins out through your feet. For more detailed information on how it works, check out www.ioncleansedetoxfootbath.com. It will take 30 minutes and you'll have reading material nearby. Many people report feeling lighter after the footbath. In addition to the basic services, special events often take place at the Yoga Cafe. There have been concerts, meditation groups, and plays. There have also been various weekend courses on subjects like reiki, huna, and self-improvement. Check the website, or call in, to see about special events. The Yoga Cafe has various specials going on at any given time. For instance, Fridays are called "Spa Fridays" as all spa services (the detoxifying footbath and all massage services) are 10% off. There is also a referral program going on now where you get special offers and discounts when you refer a massage client or yoga student. In addition, currently when you buy a yoga package, you get special discounts and offers on yoga and massage therapy. The Yoga Cafe is open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 9pm and Friday and Saturday 9am to 5pm (but exceptions can be made for late massages!). Also, one therapist is available for Sunday massages. The phone number is 336-299-1070, and the website is www.theyogacafe.biz. Feel free to call or stop by anytime during business hours, even just to check it out! A friendly worker or possibly the owner will answer any questions you have and offer to show you around. You're always welcome! |
